The Kendal Bowman is now closed but the sign remains under a preservation order. The pub sign may refer to the cloth Kendal Green worn famously by English archers during battles.

The Kendal archers were respected in pre Elizabethan days when archery was a compulsory activity. There are over 30 pubs and inns in Kendal as it used to be a national destination on every coaching timetable. Most offered stabling and a change of horses before tackling the pull over Shap Fell. Although this pub has closed and planning has been approved for residential use, the sign will remain as part of the demands by local history society. Many former coaching inns have lost all recognition of the former use. There used to be a Commercial Inn.

From "A Pictorial record of Public Houses in Kendal" by David Currington. This pub was originally called the Bishop Blaize (the inventor of wool combing) and was on the other side of the street. Prior to World War Two the pub occupied only the left half. The right half was a temperance hotel. The Pub is one of the oldest established public houses. The yard behind was called Bishop's Yard.
