The image on the sign is of a man
cutting leather. The leather trade was carried on in Manuden
from the 1500s to about 1870.
There is a plaque on the sign which reads
Manuden Leather Worker
The man above is
using a “round” or
half
moon knife to cut leather.
From the fifteenth
century to the 1870s
Manuden
leatherworkers processed sheepskins
to
make bellpulls, gloves and
other
leather goods.
