The United States Capitol has a long and complex history.

Timeline

1793 - Plan by William Thornton accepted by the commissioners and President George Washington.

1793 - The cornerstone was laid by President George Washington.

1800 - Congress, the Supreme Court, the Library of Congress, and the courts of the District of Columbia occupied the Capitol.

1807 - House of Representatives occupies the south wing.

1811 - South wing was completed.

1814 - British troops set fire to the Capitol.

1815 - Restoration of the Capitol begins.

1818 - Charles Bulfinch assumes the role of architect.

1819 - Supreme Court, the House, and the Senate are ready for use.

1826 - Building completed.

1851 - Cornerstone at the northeast corner of the House wing was laid by President Millard Fillmore.

1851 - Capitol's west central section, housing the Library of Congress, was gutted by fire.

1855 - Congress votes to replace the Bullfinch's Capitol dome.

1856 - Old dome removed.

1857 - House of Representatives meets in its new chamber.

1859 - Senate meets it its new chamber.

1859 - Thomas Crawford's plaster model for the Statue of Freedom, designed for the top of the new dome, arrives.

1863 - The statue place atop the new dome.

1866 - Italian-born artist Constantino Brumidi finished the canopy fresco.

1868 - Capitol extensions and the painting The Apotheosis of Washington completed.

1884 - 1891 - The marble terraces on the north, west, and south sides of the Capitol were constructed.

1958 - 1962 East front extensions constructed.

2008 - Capitol visitor's center opens.

The Capitol building is 175,170 square feet and has a floor area of approximately 16-1/2 acres. It's 751 feet 4 inches long, 350 feet at its widest and 288 feet high. The building contains approximately 540 rooms and has 658 windows (108 in the dome alone) and approximately 850 doorways.
