Linhares Castle is located in the village of Lihares da Beira in Portugal.
Located in a cliff northeast of the Serra da Estrela it dominates the Mondego Valley.
There are not much information about how it was founded, but, some authors say that the "Turdulos" have settled here circa 850 b.c.
At the time of the Roman ocupation the village was neighbour of a Roman road conecting Conimbriga to Guarda. This fact made the Castle an important outpost in the region.
There are references to this castle in the times of the independence of Portugal and it kept his importance during the middle ages. In 1385 Portugal made peace with Spain and the Castle lost his strategic function and there is no more information about it untill the XVII century when a public clock is was installed in the tower.
Abandoned, the castle was classified National Monument in 1922. Some archeologic research was made and the walls and towers were rebuilt.
From the original castle only the walls and towers remain, but, it´s still a very nice place to visit, and, the village is well preserved and seem´s to have stoped in time.
