The Napoleon Bonaparte Obelisk in Bergamo was erected in 1778 in honour of the mayor John Francis Correr when he decided to leave the city. Correr had been made mayor three years previously. In 1797 a bronze medallion which depicted the mayor was replaced with the one depicting Bonaparte, but this second medallion was removed after the fall of the French. The current medallion that decorates the base of the obelisk is the work of Coter and dates to 1939. The obelisk is made from sandstone.
