In 1565 Hoyko Manninga sold the castle and the mill in Pewsum to Count Edzard II of Ostfriesland and his wife, Catherine of Sweden.
Edzard II and Catherine were often at the castle. Since 1611 the castle was the main residence of her daughters, the Countess' Sophia († 1630 in Pewsum) and Maria, who later became Duchess of Brunswick-Lüneburg-Danneberg. The award of "castle bread" to the poor of the community and Pewsum Woquard reminded of this time. This tradition had been maintained until the First World War.
In 1859 the castle passed into private hands. Today only the lower castle, the core of the castle from 1458 is preserved.
In 1954 the castle was purchased by the "Heimat Verein Krummhörn e. V." with the help of "Kreises Norden" and the "Ostfriesischen Landschaft". The castle was at the brink of decay when the restoration was begun. The municipality Krummhörn took over the castle in 1980. There are currently a museum in the castle and the registry office.
