The point of land where the Copper Harbor Lighthouse is presently located was famous in the mid 1840's for an entirely different reason, copper. Its presence here sparked the first great copper rush in America. And the danger to shipping posed by the nearby reef lead to the building of the first Copper Harbor Lighthouse a few years later. The most interesting thing about this You Are Here Map is that it is on the opposite side of the point that the copper discovery site was actually at.
