Mt. Tom State Reservation consists of 2,082 acres of parkland primarily used for hiking and noted for its scenic vistas. It is unofficially divided into upper and lower areas. The upper part has the visitors center, a pavilion with picnic facilities , Goat Peak and Bray Lookout Towers and the ruins of an old resort hotel, the Eyrie House. The lower part has large building known as the warming shelter with electricity and restrooms, Lake Bray which is used for fishing and ice skating, and picnic facilities. In between, are twenty miles of hiking trails including a section of the Metacomet-Monadnock trail that runs the length of the state.

The Mt. Tom Range runs through the west (upper) section of the reservation. In spring and fall this is a migratory corridor for thousands of hawks, falcons, vultures and eagles. They ride the thermals created by the abrupt rise of the mountains. At these times, Goat Peak and Bray Tower are premier bird watching locations.
