Box Hill and Westhumble station was built at the insistence of Thomas Grissell the owner of Norbury Park, in part compensation for the railway cutting across his land to the north of the village. Grissell also obtained the right from the LBSCR to stop any train on request.
The station has had many names over the years:-
Year Name of station
1867 West Humble for Box Hill
1870 Box Hill and Burford Bridge
1896 Box Hill
1904 Box Hill and Burford Bridge
1958 Boxhill and Westhumble
2006 Box Hill and Westhumble
The station serves London and Horsham with one train per hour. However, this area is such a magnet for walkers that more trains run at weekends and public holidays. This is because the North Downs is less than half a mile away, and the start / end point of the Thames Down Link, a long distance path between this station and Kingston Upon Thames.
