Verden is a town in Grady County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 659 at the 2000 census.
Verden lies approximately halfway between Chickasha and Anadarko on U.S. Highway 62/State Highway 9. The town was originally known as Cottonwood Grove. It was the location of Camp Napoleon where in 1865, representatives from 13 of the Indian Territory tribes formed a pact to stand united against any unjust demands made by the U.S. government after the Civil War ended.
In 1900, the Rock Island railroad came through the area and Kiowa tribesman James N. Jones received land near Cottonwood Grove. In 1902, a post office was established here under the name Verden. In 1907, when Oklahoma became a state, Verden, with its population of 312, became part of Grady County.
Verden has always been primarily an agricultural town. Its population has remained steady over the years, between 400 and 500. The town suffered a major downtown fire in 1908, and flooding has been a past problem as it sits in the Washita River Valley.
Verden’s population in 2000 was 659. There are 74 businesses listed in Verden. Its post office, at 100 Morris Avenue, is located in a building which formerly housed a bank. The old Cottonwood Grove jail is extant and an interesting find.
