The original dam was built back in 1827 by John Henry Dunn (who Dunnville is named after). The dam was built to regulate flow to the feeder canal for the Welland Canal. Today its current use is regulating flow down to Port Maitland. The Dam regularly has fishermen who hunt for Dunnville's famous Mudcats.
