Gracelawn Cemetery, located in Edmond, was established in the late 1800s. It is currently owned and managed by the City of Edmond. In the south section of the cemetery, you will find this headstone for Allen Watson, which commemorates his lifetime interest in ham radio.
Allen Watson became a ham radio operator in 1934 and was assigned the call sign "W5ERY." He held an Amateur Extra license and always referred to himself as Edmond's Radio Youngster (ERY). I met Allen during the 1990s, when he was already 80 years old. He was still going strong in the hobby, full of life and energy, and so interesting to listen to. He had seen amateur radio from its early days into the technology boom of today.
His black granite headstone sits atop a white base. On the west (back) side his Call Sign W5ERY stands out on a rectangular white background. Though not an actual "drawing," a ham's call sign is the symbol of his involvement in the amateur radio hobby.
