This location is on a bridge (South Bridge) ~500m from the CBD of Singapore. At this location, when one looks due south, one will see the a bevy of skyscrapers and large office buildings across Singapore River.
This general area is also something of a tourist locale. To the immediate south along the riverside is a line of more expensive cafes and restaurants, and on either side of the river are a goodly number of tourist sites (museums, sculptures, and so forth). Entry to the bridge is unrestricted.
Singapore is a citystate with a largely democratic, and entirely republican government. The island has been continuously inhabited since at least the 2nd century CE, however, the history of modern Singapore began in 1819, when the English imperialist, Sir Stamford Raffles, founded the city of Singapore. During the 19th century its wealth and importance continually increased. Occupied by the Japanese during WW2, the island achieved independence in 1963. It is now a prosperous and developed country.
