Charlemagne (c.742-814) was the son of King Pepin the Short and Bertrada of Laon. When his father died in 768, he was co-ruler with his brother Carloman I. Carloman died in 771 and Charlemagne then ruled alone. He continued his father's policy of protecting the Papacy. Pope Leo III, on 25 December 800, crowned him as the head of the Holy Roman Empire at the Vatican. He was canonized as a Saint in 1166 by Antipope Paschal III. His reign ended with his death in 814...and he is recognized as one of the most important European leaders ever. In fact, Pope John Paul II referred to him as the Father of Europe.
