The Roaring Mountain viewpoint is located about five miles north of Norris Junction along the Grand Loop Road in Yellowstone National Park. There are two signs at the viewpoint. One is titled “Roaring Mountain” and discusses the microscopic organisms that inhabit thermal waters. The other is titled “Fumaroles” and discusses these steam vents.
Roaring Mountain is a white, steaming hillside caused by strongly acidic steam system which has intensely altered the Lava Creek Tuff which makes up the slope. The Lava Creek Tuff represents the last major caldera forming eruption of the Yellowstone volcanic system about 640,000 years ago. On top of Roaring Mountain there are a series of large hydrothermal explosion craters of late glacial age. The Yellowstone is one of the world’s largest active volcanic system.
