In 1899, Mahncke influenced Brackenridge to donate a large tract of land north of downtown San Antonio to be developed as a public park. Since Mahncke was the city's first Parks Commissioner, he was the one in charge of developing what became known as Brackenridge Park. Brackenridge Park opened in 1901. But, a few years later, in 1906 Mahncke got pneumonia and died. Because of the close friendship between Mahncke and Brackenridge, Mr. Brackenridge set aside another plot of land across the street from his namesake park to honor his friend Ludwig Mahncke.
The sculpture is a larger-than-life bust made of bronze set atop a pink granite. The front of the base has a bronze circular design with a small human figure pointing toward the name of Ludwig Mahncke carve into the base. On the bottom part of the adornment is the text "A Tribute From The People." On the back of the base is engraved: "Ludwig Mahncke San Antonio's Park Commissioner from 1896 to 1906."
