This station, a U.S. Geological Survey standard bench mark disk, is located at the Masonic Temple building in Bethel, CT. It is set in the south end of the top step of the east flight of stairs leading to the lower entrance at the north side (front) of the building. The NGS datasheet description is as follows:
AT BETHEL, FAIRFIELD COUNTY, AT THE MASONIC TEMPLE ON GREENWOOD
AVENUE, 10 FEET EAST OF THE CENTER OF THE MAIN ENTRANCE, IN THE
TOP STEP OF THE EAST FRONT BASEMENT ENTRANCE, 45 FEET SOUTH OF
THE CENTERLINE OF THE AVENUE, AND 1 FOOT HIGHER THAN THE AVENUE.
A UNITED STATES GEOLOGICAL SURVEY STANDARD DISK, STAMPED 411.
According to the USGS records, the designation of this mark is -10 W 1922 411-, although it is not stamped this way. The tablet style and material matches others from the same (W 1922) era, and there is no evidence anywhere that it is a reset. Therefore, it is safe to say that it is the original, and that the NGS datasheet description is the most accurate.
UPDATE (05-15-2012): The building that this mark was set in has been recently demolished, and the area is now a parking lot. Consequently, the mark has been destroyed. In spite of this, I am keeping this waymark page in place for historical purposes.
