Campbell's Covered Bridge, crossing Beaverdam Creek in Grenville County, is the last remaining covered bridge in South Carolina. It was built in 1909 by Charles Irwin Willis (1878–1966) and was named for grist mill owner Alexander Lafayette Campbell (1836–1920) who built and maintained the nearby Campbell corn mill.
The bridge is located off Pleasant Hill Road, a short side trip from the Cherokee Foothills Scenic Highway, in a Greenville County park. The park contains a gravel road, closed to vehicle traffic in 1980, that crosses the 38 ft long,12 ft wide bridge. The road continues past the bridge apporximately 100 yards. The park also contains a "You Are Here" map with bridge info, a historical marker, and a picnic area.
Structurally the bridge is a relatively rare four-span Howe truss. The Campbell bridge has been restored twice, first in 1964 by the Crescent Garden Club, and again in 1990.
Historical marker text:
Campbell's covered bridge, built in 1909, is the last extant covered bridge in S.C. Built by Charles Irwin Willis (1878-1966), it was named for Alexander Lafayette Campbell (1836-1920), who owned and operated a grist mill here for many years. Measuring 35 feet long and 12 feet wide, it is an excellent example of a four-span Howe truss, featuring diagonal timbers and vertical iron rods.
