"Hywel Dda Health Board’s plan for the future of Bronglais Hospital involves closing the colo-rectal unit and centralising complex, emergency and maternity surgery away from Aberystwyth.
A copy of the plan, which is due to be officially released next month, was leaked to the Cambrian News. It justifies fears expressed in recent weeks by top doctors at the hospital and politicians.
Health chiefs have resolved that many services will have to be removed from Bronglais and centralised, and the service most under threat is the hospital’s colo-rectal unit.
Under the proposal for cancer services, planned surgery and medical services, the health board’s recommended option would see Bronglais’s colo-rectal unit closed, with all colo-rectal cancer services
being split between Withybush and Glangwili hospitals. Breast cancer surgery would also be carried out at Llanelli rather than at Aberystwyth.
There would also be centralised centres for complex surgery at Glangwili and an orthopaedic centre at Prince Philip Hospital in Llanelli. Bronglais would just retain an inpatient orthopaedic service for joint replacements.
While Bronglais would retain a maternity unit with consultants, all higher-risk deliveries would have to be sent to a centralised maternity unit at Glangwili."
