The excellent “The Milestone Society” website has the following information:
Coordinates - TQ 25970 62960, Location - B2230 ( was A217), Brighton Road, outside Larch Vale Court.
No photographs on website but I took a few for you which I shall of course submit for publication.
I have a good friend who lives just down the road in the “Village”.
Therefore I walk from Sutton to Belmont on a regular basis, at least twice a month.
On my way back to Sutton yesterday I was quite taken aback to see this milestone, must be new I thought (rather silly thought I know considering it was erected in 1745)!
How did it I miss it all these years. I suppose I wasn’t looking out for items to Waymark then.
What does it say on the front:
?? Miles from the Standard in Cornhill London 1745
Unfortunately time and erosion have completely eroded the number of miles hence the ??.
According to the London Borough of Sutton website this milestone is a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
It can be found on the pavement on the East side of Brighton Road between Egmont Road and The Downsway.
Condition: Worn
Date placed: 01/01/1745
Material: Stone
Inscription: ?? Miles from the Standard in Cornhill London 1745
(The top is eroded and the distance cannot be read anymore.)
Name of road: B2230 Brighton Road
