Lewis & Clark visited Vermillion and Spririt Mound in 1804 and called the present-day Vermillion River the White Stone. By 1860 the town had 215 residents; but was mostly destroyed by the 1881 Missouri River flood that moved the river south to the Nebraska Bluffs and the residents of Vermillion to the South Dakota Bluffs. The Sioux City to Yankton segment Missouri River Historic Highway is described and many historic and important landmarks identified to inspire your further investigations.
