The statue, carved by Francis Derwent Wood RA in 1924, stands 2.5m tall and is carved from Portland stone. The statue shows Britannia facing south with a helmet on her head. She is wearing a diaphanous robe. On her right arm she has a shield that looks to have the Union flag, or part of it, carved upon it. In the crook of her left arm she is supporting a trident with its three prongs pointing to the sky and the other end resting on the ground. The trident is possibly made from copper. Her bare, right foot, is resting on a spherical object
