An impressive Victorian replacement for an original medieval reredos.

The original reredos was built in 1484 by William Wallingford, the 47th Abbott of St Albans Abbey, at a cost of £733. It was destroyed during the dissolution of the monasteries. Lord Aldenham paid for the screen’s restoration in the 19th century.

• Offa the Second, King of Mercia,
• St. Edward the Confessor
• St. Hugh, Bishop of Lincoln
• Pope Adrian IV. or Nicholas Breakspear, the only English pope
• Venerable Bede
• St. Cuthbert, Bishop of Lindis- farne
• St. Helen, mother of the Emperor Constantine the Great
• St. Benedict
A carving of the Resurrection above the altar, was created by Sir Alfred Gilbert RA, but was unfinished by Sir Alfred.
