Outside the station stand various pubs including The Railway Tavern, The Ship and The Queen’s Head. The Queen’s Head was visited by the late Queen Mother during the Second World War, during which she pulled pints for the locals. She repeated the visit in the 1980s when the pub was refurbished and again went behind the bar to pull pints.

Docklands Light Railway (DLR) was one of Britain's first light rail systems. It has one of the safest and most advanced automatic train control systems in the world.

The DLR opened in 1987 to serve the London Docklands with 11 trains and 15 stations.

Since then a number of extensions have seen the DLR linked to Bank, Beckton, Lewisham, London City Airport and Woolwich Arsenal.

Today the DLR is a 34km railway with 40 stations and more than 100 trains. The network carries almost 70 million passengers a year, this is expected to rise to more than 100 million in 2012.
