The Fortress of São Vicente is located in the Cape of São Vincente in the Algarve, Portugal.
Its origins go back to the reign of D. Manuel I of Portugal (1495-1521) when the Bishop of the Algarve, D. Fernando Coutinho, then ordered to raise a castle and a lighthouse as part of the defense system of the coast region.
The original structure, devastated in 1587, by the British corsair attack of the, Francis Drake; it was rebuilt as from 1632, under the reign of Filipe III of Portugal (1621-1640). The modern bastions erected at the time, were devastated by the tsunami resulting from the earthquake of 1755.
Like in the Fortaleza de Sagres, from 1793 to Queen Maria I (1777-1816) started the rebuilding of the structure, now restored.
