Die Erdpyramiden von Platten
Die Erdpyramiden von Platten befinden sich im oberen Teil des Litschbachgrabens nordöstlich über dem Brunecker Talkessel. Sie sind das bedeutenste Vorkommen solcher Erosionstürme im gesamten Pustertaler Raum.
Voraussetzung für dieses Naturwunder sind Ablagerungen aus der Eiszeit bestehend aus Glimmerschiefer, Granit und Kalk durchsetzt mit kantigen und teilweise abgerundeten Steinen und Felsblöcken.
Entstanden sind die Erdpyramiden vor einigen hundert Jahren als es bei einem Unwetter zu einem Erdrutsch kam. In den darauffolgenden Jahrzehnten wurde durch den Wechsel von einzelnen ergiebigen Regenfällen mit erheblichen Trockenzeiten der Hang vom Regen zerfurcht und es bildete sich ein Gewirr von Kegeln und Pfeilern. Das aufgeweichte Material begann zu rutschen und trennte sich von dem trockenen Boden am Rand der Erosionszone, welcher durch Wald geschütz war. Auf diese Weise bildete sich eine scharfe Grenze zwischen dem trockenen standfesten und dem abrutschenden Material. Dabei kam es zur Entstehung einer Steilwand an der Obergrenze des feuchten, relativ schnell abfliessenden Materials. Zur Herausbildung der Erdpyramiden aus dieser Steilwand bedarf es eines Felsblockes der geeignet ist, das darunter liegende Material hart und trocken zu halten. Die Grösse einer späteren Pyramide ist abhängig davon wie hoch die Steilwand hinaufragt und in welcher Höhe sich der Deckstein befindet.
Stürzt der Deckstein einer Erdpyramide herab wird diese nicht mehr vor Regen geschützt, innerhalb kurzer Zeit durchnäßt und abgetragen.
Zur gleichen Zeit entstehen jedoch in den höheren Lagen neue Erdpyramiden während die talwärts stehenden von der Vegetation umwachsen und vom Regen zerstört werden.
Bedingt durch diesen fortlaufenden Prozess ändert sich das Bild der Erdpyramiden ständig.

The earth pyramids of Platten
The Pyramids of Platten are located in the upper part of the so called Litschbachgraben, situated northeast of the Bruneck basin.
They are the most significant occurrence of such towers of erosion in the entire Pustertal region.
Prerequisite for this natural wonder are deposits of glacial consisting of mica schist, granite and limestone interspersed with angular and partially rounded stones and boulders.
A few hundred years ago they were built during a storm that caused a landslide. In the following decades single heavy rainfalls alternated with significant dry seasons the slope was furrowed by the rain and formed a maze of cones and Pillars. The softened material began to slide and separated from the dry soil at the edge of the erosion zone, which was protected by woods. In this way, a sharp boundary was formed between the steady dry and the slipping material. This led to the emergence of a steep Wall at the upper limit of the damp and relatively quickly outflowing material. Shaping a pyramid out of the wall requires a boulder suitable to hold the underlying material neat and dry. The size of a pyramid is depending both on how high the wall is rising as well on the height of the capstone.
If the capstone falls down, the earth pyramid is no longer protected from rain, soaked in a short time and removed.
At the same time new pyramids arise in the higher elevations while the ones standing down in the valley are overgrown with vegetation and are destroyed by the rain.
Due to this ongoing process the sight of the pyramids is changing all the time.
