The "Geological trail Winkelberg" near Winklen in Oetztal / Tyrol / Austria tells the story about the biggest landslide in the central Alps. Wandering between age-old rocks and boulders you will learn interesting facts about the unique geological history of this area. About 8,700 years ago, an avalanche moved about 2,2 cubic kilometers of rock mass into the Oetztal. The rock mass was spread over an area of 12 square kilometers, impounding the river Ache to a huge lake. When the river broke through again, the fertile plain of Laengenfeld was left behind.
ROUTE-DESCRIPTION
The easily accessible hiking trail "Geolehrpfad Winkelberg" takes you through an idyllic and varied landscape. From the parking area you cross the river and leave the village Winklen. Directly after the last house on the right, the path starts with a review panel, displaying the locations of the 11 information boards. First, you wander along the left bank of the river. After a few minutes, turn left and enter the fairy tale forest ("Maerchenwald"). Along this hiking trail there are many display cases with domestic animals (summer only) and of course the panels with geological indications.
The trail ends at the idyllic lake "Winkelbergsee". A great place to rest and relax! If you have time and energy, you may extend the hiking trail from the lake up to the Alpine-Hut "Wurzbergalm" (in winter, don't forget to borrow a sledge for the way back :-)
