Die beim Aufstieg zum Gebhardsberg sichtbaren Felsen wurden vor ca. 21 Millionen Jahren während einer Zeitperiode gebildet, die als Tertiär-Zeit bezeichnet wird. Es handelt sich um sogenannte Sedimentgesteine, welche durch Abtragung älterer Gesteine und erneute Ablagerungen der Abtragungsprodukte (Sedimentation) entstanden.

Vor rund 40 Millionen Jahren (frühes Tertiär) begann die Entwicklung dieser trogförmigen Vertiefung, die sich schließlich entlang des Alpenkörpers vom Genfer See bis an das Wiener Becken heran entwickelte. In dieser voralpinen Senke herrschten wechselweise marine und Süßwasserverhältnisse.

Die Alpen waren damals bereits ein Hochgebirge mit typischem Deckenbau. Die Gesteine des Gebhardsberges verdanken ihre Entstehung einem Fluß, der vor rund 21 Millionen Jahren damit begann, gewaltige Sand- und Geröllmassen in einem Schuttfächer (Pfänderfächer) nach Norden in das Molassemeer zu schütten. Der Wechsel zwischen sandigen und kiesigen Lagen ist entlang des geologischen Lehrpfades vielerorts deutlich erkennbar.

The were trying to climb Gebhardsberg visible rocks formed about 21 million years ago during a time period which is called the Tertiary period. These are called sedimentary rocks, which resulted from erosion of older rocks and re-deposits of the ablation products (sedimentation).

Around 40 million years ago (early Tertiary) started the development of this trough-like depression, which eventually developed approach along the body from Lake Geneva to the Alps to the Vienna Basin. In this alpine valley alternately dominated marine and freshwater conditions.

The Alps were then already a mountain range with a typical ceiling construction. The rocks of Gebhardsberg owe their existence to a river, which began about 21 million years so that, huge masses of sand and gravel in alluvial fans (fan pledges) to the north in the Molasse pour.
