This former drinking fountain is known locally as Idwal's folly.

According to the local story, the fountain was built by a local property owner called Idwal on the site of a spring which miraculously appeared overnight. He charged those walking up the Great Orme along Old Road one old penny for a cup of cool clean water from the fountain. Unfortunately for Idwal his money-making scheme came to an abrupt end when it was discovered that the water originated from a leaking pipe in a nearby property! When the pipe was fixed Idwal's fountain quickly dried up.

Thus leaving Idwal with a useless memorial to his folly and greed.
