Steven lead the Culpeper Minutemen which was a rifleman infantry militia formed from local frontier volunteers. He rose through several ranks in his leadership; however, also considered quitting but was convinced to stay by Nathaniel Greene. He died at home in his native Culpeper. The original one acre Steven family cemetery was given to the Masons in 1820 to be the caretakers. The grave itself is unassuming, thus may be difficult to find without the above coordinates.
Inscription:
In memory of General Edward Stevens
Who died August the 17th, 1820
at his seat in the county of Culpeper
In the 76th year of his age.
This gallant officer and upright man
Had served his country
with reputation
In the Field and Senate of his native state.
He took an active part and had a principal share
In the war of the Revolution
And acquired great distinction at
The Battles of Great Bridge,
Brandywine, Germantown,
Camden, Guilford Courthouse
and Seige of York
And although zealous in the cause
of American freedom,
His conduct was not marked with the
Least degree of malevolence or party spirit.
Those who honestly differed from him
in opinion
He always treated with singular tenderness.
In strict integrity, honest patriotism
And immovable courage,
He was surpassed by none
And had few equals.
