Although most people think of Unicorns as Mediaeval mythical creatures, on UK pub signs they are used as heraldic references.
It is believed that Ripon dates back to at least the 7th Century A.D. but in any case the current Cathedral was founded in 1069.
This hotel is in the main market square, dates back to the 17th Century and used to be a coaching inn for coaches travelling to Newcastle, Leeds and London.
These days it is a pub on the ground floor but still used as a hotel with 32 rooms.
