A marble statue of Jesus Christ stands in the center of the Evergreen Memorial Gardens, a cemetery and crematory in Great Mills, Maryland. Jesus gazes towards heaven and his arms are raised to the sky. He is barefoot and wears a draped robe that covers his head. There are lilies on both side of Him. The base bears the simple inscription:
I
AM
THE
RESURRECTION
AND
THE
LIFE
A small bricked-in circular garden surrounds the Christ statue with a ground lamp for night illumination.
Jesus Christ was the Son of God born of the Virgin Mary. It is said that God sent His Son to redeem the human race and atone for mankind's sins. Jesus was crucified on a wooden cross at the hands of the Romans and on His death He asked God for forgiveness. His body was removed and buried in a sepulchre. It was sealed with a boulder and guards were stationed outside. On the third day, a great earthquake erupted and an angel descended from heaven and moved aside the boulder. The guards were terrified. When the holy women arrived to anoint the body, the tomb was empty. The women were told by an angel that Jesus had been resurrected from the dead. Jesus appeared to His disciples before finally ascending into Heaven.¹
The statue of Jesus Christ standing in the cemetery with His arms and eyes raised heavenward is a reminder that life can be resurrected in the Kingdom of God after death on earth.
