George W. Brackenridge, (sculpture) - San Antonio, TX - Smithsonian Art Inventory Sculptures on Waymarking.com

George Washington Brackenridge was born in Indiana in 1832 and moved to Texas in 1853. During the Civil War, he was formed a cotton firm and became involved in the Matamoros cotton trade. He left Texas and became the US Treasury Agent in New Orleans in 1863. Moving back to San Antonio, he organized the San Antonio National Bank. From 1883 to 1906 he was president of the San Antonio Water Works Co. He became president of a trust company, director of the Express Publishing Co., and president of the San Antonio School Board. From 1886 to 1911, and again from 1917 to 1919, he was a regent of the University of Texas. He supported many endevors in San Antonio, TX, and donated the 100-plus acres of land to the city that became Brackenridge Park, the very park in which this statue is located. His homestead was sold to the Sisters of Charity and is now part of the University of Incarnate Word University.
The bronze statue of George W. Brackenridge is at the entrance of the Brackenridge Park along the 3400 block of Broadway Street, where Funston Place intersects Broadway. The small garden area where the statue is located is on the north side of the park's entrance. There is a limestone wall that matches the limestone base on which the six foot statue is mounted. Brackenridge is sitting in a chair, with his coat draped over the back of the chair. He is dressed in business suit, and has his legs crossed at his ankles. His left hand holds a book that is angled against his left knee.
A few feet from his feet, a bronze plaque is mounted on the limestone wall that runs behind the statue. It reads:
"George W. Brackenridge
January 14, 1832 - December 28, 1920
'The world knew him as a great financier - a great philanthropist - a great friend of lower and higher and eternal education -" ...... 'The students - past, present, and future, - for whose education he provided are his memorial."
