Marker Text: In Memory of Terry Fox
Terry Fox was born July 28, 1958 in Winnipeg. Because his maternal grandparents, Jack and Mildred Wark, resided in Ninette, he was baptized here in the Untied Church manse. Terry and his siblings spent many summers in this area and enjoyed swimming and fishing in Pelican Lake.
Terry was diagnosed with bone cancer in March 1977 and his right leg was amputated above the knee. In April 1980, using a prosthetic and beginning in Newfoundland, he commenced his "Marathon of Hope" run across Canada to raise funds for cancer research. After covering 5,374 km the run came to an end near thunder Bay, Ontario, when it was discovered that Terry's cancer had spread to his lungs.
Terry died June 28, 1981, but through the annual countrywide "Terry Fox Run," money continues to be raised for cancer research.
This park was renamed in Terry Fox's memory on June 19, 2004.
