EN: The "Zentral- und Hochschulbibliothek" is the largest library in Central Switzerland. It was founded 1951 as a merger of Bürgerbibliothek (1812-) and Kantonsbibliothek (1832-). The original building from 1951 attracted a lot of attention and is now listed as a heritage site of national significance. But over the decades it could not cope with the growing collection. Today several departments of the collection reside at other addresses and the financial situation of the city does not allow a satisfying solution within the next few years.
DE: Die "Zentral- und Hochschulbibliothek" ist die größte Bibliothek der Zentralschweiz. Sie wurde 1951 als Zusammenschluss der Burgerbibliothek (1812-) und Kantonsbibliothek (1832-) gegründet. Das ursprüngliche Gebäude aus dem Jahre 1951 zog eine Menge Aufmerksamkeit auf sich und steht unter Denkmalschutz. Aber im Laufe der Jahrzehnte konnte es die wachsende Sammlung nicht mehr bewältigen. Heute sind mehrere Abteilungen an anderen Adressen ausgelagert und die finanzielle Lage der Stadt erlaubt keine befriedigende Lösung innerhalb der nächsten Jahre.
