"Die Festung Nauders war in den Kriegen 1848, 1859, 1866 und das letzte mal zum Beginn des Krieges gegen Italien 1915 verteidigungsbereit armiert. Die Festungsgeschütze waren kasemattiert und so angeordnet, dass sie die möglichen Aufstellungsplätze gegnerischer Artillerie, sowie der Vorfeld gegen einen Infanterieangriff sichern konnten. Die Sturmfreiheit wurde durch das aufgehende Mauerwerk der Sperre und die Nahverteidigung wurde durch die vielen Gewehrscharten, durch den Stille-Bach, die permanenten Drahthindernissen und dem Zwinger gesichert. Durch die vorspringenden Gebäudeteile war eine Flankierung gegeben. Die Armierung bestand aus acht Stück M-94 Kasemattkanonen in Kasemattlafetten. Die Besatzung bestand im Kriegsfall aus 87 Mann. Das Vorfeld konnte mit einem 30-cm Azetylenscheinwerfer und Leuchtpatronen ausgeleuchtet werden. Die Wasserversorgung wurde mit einer Saugpumpe aus dem Stillebach bewerkstelligt. Später wurde oberhalb der Festung eine Quelle südlich des Valdigasteibaches gefasst und zur Festung geleitet. Das Wasserbecken aus Granit mit dem gusseisernen Wasserspeier ist noch vorhanden und zu besichtigen, die Wasserleitung ist defekt. Die Vorräte an Lebensmittel und Munition war für 14 Tage berechnet. Die Straße wurde so optimal ausgebaut, dass sie bis in die Neuzeit das enorme Verkehrsaufkommen bewältigen konnte." - Quelle: Wikipedia
