EN: Isaak Iselin (1728, Basel – 1782, Basel) was a Swiss philosopher of history and politics. He studied law and philosophy at the University of Basel and the University of Göttingen. In 1756 he became secretary of the republic of Basel. In 1777 he founded the "Gesellschaft für das Gute und Gemeinnützige" (GGG) a private, non-profit organization. Inspired by Enlightenment ideals, the GGG has played a significant role in the history of education and social welfare in Basel. The modern GGG operates as an umbrella organization supporting dozens of groups with social or cultural service missions, including charitable foundations, libraries, social service agencies, and a boy choir. The statue was created by Karl Alfred Lanz in 1891. It is located in the court yard of the main public library of Basel that is also managed by the GGG.

Er studierte Rechtswissenschaften und Philosophie an der Universität Basel und der Universität Göttingen. Im Jahre 1756 wurde er Sekretär der Republik Basel. Im Jahre 1777 gründete er die "Gesellschaft für das Gute und Gemeinnützige" (GGG) eine private, gemeinnützige Organisation. Inspiriert von Idealen der Aufklärung hat die GGG eine bedeutende Rolle in der Geschichte der Bildung und sozialen Wohlfahrt in Basel gespielt. Die moderne GGG arbeitet als eine Dachorganisation und unterstützt Dutzende von Gruppen mit sozialen oder kulturellen Zielen, darunter Stiftungen, Bibliotheken, soziale Einrichtungen und einem Kinderchor. 2008 gehörten etwa 90 Organisationen mit mehr als 3,000 Mitarbeiterinnen und Mitarbeiter zur GGG.
