Gower Cemetery was originally established as a black cemetery in the town of Edmond. After years of neglect, it was no longer possible to identify most burials in this cemetery, which was established in 1896. Myrtle Gower Thomas spent years researching the history of this cemetery, and eventually had it placed on the National Register of Historic Places. Today it is a beautiful, well maintained cemetery.
Several granite monuments are located here honoring those who restored the cemetery and its records. As you enter the front gate, to your left, this monument is engraved with a quote from Kahlil Gibran (1883 - 1931). Gibran was a Lebanese-American artist, poet and writer. The inscription reads:
The just is close
to the people's hearts,
but the mericiful and poor
are close to the heart of God.Kahlil Gibran
The website shown below gives a biography of Gibran.
