 Strathcona, MN - 56759 - posted by saopaulo1

Since 1973, all incorporated towns were declared officially to be ‘cities’ by an act of the Minnesota Legislature. Ever wonder about those ‘little cities’? This series of 100 waymarks will take you to all corners of the great state of Minnesota to visit the 100 smallest of the incorporated cities in the state. All have a great story to tell.
This is the 81st of 100 of the cities described in the book LITTLE MINNESOTA. Strathcona is a city in southwestern Roseau County and is considered one of the gateways to both Thief Lake Wildlife Management Area and Agassiz National Wildlife Area. These two areas are worth the drive if one wishes to see wildlife of all kinds, but especially migratory waterfowl.
Once a prosperous railroad town, Strathcona’s name commemorates Scotsman Donald Alexander Smith, later Lord Strathcona, who came to Canada in 1838 in the service of the Hudson's Bay Company and was stationed for 13 years at trading posts on the Labrador coast and later in the Canadian Northwest. He was one of the principal financial promoters for construction of the transcontinental Canadian Pacific Railway and was a friend of James J. Hill, under whose leadership the Great Northern Railway was built.
The highlight of late summer in Roseau County is the National Threshing Bee that, since 1965, is held yearly in Strathcona. Anyone interested in agriculture, great food and a good time travels to Minnesota’s 10th smallest city an education in pioneer life. The bee today includes demonstrations of grain threshing, cultivating with horses and pioneering survival skills. The event wraps up with a horse & buggy parade.
This series of waymarks is tuned to getting people to visit these wonderful small communities before they disappear completely. To validate your ‘find’, please post a photo of you with your GPS at the coordinates and please relate a little tidbit about what you learned about the town and its people that is not in this narrative or the book.
