EN: The neo-classical villa is situated in the St. Margarethen Park. It was built by Karl Burckhardt-Thurneysen, the owner of the estate St. Margarethen at this time. About 1822/23 he let build an English garden with a mansion. The plans for the house are attributed to the architect Achilles Huber.
Unlike baroque country estates, the mansion was not the center of the composition but fits perfectly and unobtrusively into the overall design.
The neo-classical country house in St. Margaret Park is considered one of the first examples of a villa in the style of Early Classicism in the area of Basel.
The villa was the Basel studios of the Swiss Broadcasting Company between 1932 and 1940. Nowadays it as a day care center.
DE: Die klassizistische Villa liegt inmitten des St. Margarethenparks. Sie wurde von Karl Burckhardt-Thurneysen erbaut, dem damaligen Besitzer des Hofguts St. Margarethen. Er liess hier um 1822/23 einen englischen Garten mit einem Landhaus einrichten. Die Pläne für das Haus werden dem Architekten Achilles Huber zugeschrieben.
Im Gegensatz zu barocken Landsitzen ist das Landhaus nicht das Zentrum der Anlage, sondern fügt sich harmonisch und unauffällig in die Gesamtkonzeption ein.
Das klassizistische Landhaus im St. Margarethenpark gilt als eines der ersten Beispiele einer Villa im Stile des Frühklassizismus in der Umgebung Basels.
Die Villa war von 1932 bis 1940 das Studio Basel der Schweizerischen Radiogesellschaft. Heute ist darin ein Tagesheim untergebracht.
