A much loved statue, dubbed “Two Fat Ladies” by Wimbledonians. Outside the Centre Court Shopping Centre in Wimbledon town centre, not the Centre Court of the local tennis club round the corner!

Wimbledon's much-loved statue, Walking Women, used to be located right outside the Rotunda entrance to the Shopping Centre.

It disappeared for a few months following building works prompting rumours of its theft (it was actually reported to the local constabulary as stolen by commuters in January 2012).

It has been relocated to Centre Court Shopping Centre, approx 25m from its original location at the lower entrance to the Shopping Centre and was unveiled (again) in June 2012.

The artwork is of two larger-than-life women, who appear to be striding purposefully towards you when you encounter the sculpture, striking a pose which is left up to the viewer’s own interpretation.

The 8ft high bronze sculpture, created by Andre Wallace, was unveiled at the opening of Centre Court Shopping Centre, in September 1992.

The sculpture was specially designed for the site following Andre's selection from a competition held by Speyhawk Retail Plc in Autumn 1991.

It took the artist six months to complete the two figures before they were cast in bronze by Meridian Fine Art Co. Ltd.

Most of the above text was taken from local newspaper websites (Your LocalGuardian etc).

More on the sculptor Andre Wallace

I must be honest and say I am not a great fan of some of the artists other works but its all down to interpretation isn't it!
