The Eagle Scout designation is the highest rank in the Boy Scouts. First awarded in 1912, this rank has been earned by more than 2,000,000 young men. The title of Eagle Scout is held for life, thus giving rise to the phrase "Once an Eagle, always an Eagle". As of 2012, requirements include earning at least 21 merit badges, and demonstrating Scout Spirit, leadership and service. The requirements include an Eagle Scout Service Project where the Scout must further demonstrate service and leadership. [information excerpt from Wikipedia].
David Campbell (1984-2005) was a member of Edmond's Troop 77, that holds the distinction of being the longest continually operating troop, associated with the same sponsoring organization (the First United Methodist Church of Edmond) in the Last Frontier Council. They recently celebrated 75 years chartered with this church.
David Campbell graduated from Edmond Memorial High School in 2003. He was a chemistry student attending the University of Oklahoma, when he passed away in 2005. He earned his Eagle Scout award in 2002. This project consists of a flagpole in front of the Methodist Church on which the flags of the United States, and the Methodist Church fly. An engraved granite stone at the base of the flagpole reads:
