"Ein Kreuzweg hat wohl schon zur ursprünglichen Anlage auf den Kalvarienberg gehört und der Vergleich mit der ältesten erhaltenen Darstellung zeigt, daß sich seither nicht allzuviel verändert haben dürfte.
Der Kreuzweg besteht aus sieben kleinen, offenen Kapellen mit Rundbogennischen und schindelgedecktem Satteldach.
Innen befinden sich Kreuzwegbilder, die so nicht zu ursprünglichen Ausstattung gehören, sondern 1846 von Franz Kirchstättner gemalt wurden. Bei der Restaurierung 1984 erwies sich allerdings, daß sich unter der heute sichtbaren Malerei Reste der älteren befinden. Ein Versuch, diese freizulegen, erschien allerdings nicht sinnvoll.
Im Vergleich zu neueren Kreuzwegen, die gewöhnlich vierzehn Stationen haben, mag bei dem auf den Arzler Kalvarienberg die Beschränkung auf sieben auffallen. Hierzu ist zu bemerken, daß die Kreuzwege im Laufe der Zeit immer stationenreicher werden: in der einfachsten Form sind es zwei (Haus des Pilatus und Golgotha), später häufig sieben und erst ab dem 17./18. Jahrhundert immer öfter vierzehn. Diese heute gängige Vierzehn-Zahl ist vor allem dem Wirken der beiden Franziskaner Antonius von Daza (16. Jh.) und Leonardo di Porto Maurizio (1676-1751) zuzuschreiben.
Die ältere Siebenzahl scheint abgesehen von der besonderen Bedeutung, die der Zahl Sieben häufig begemessen wird, vor allem als Parallele zu den sieben Stationskirchen in Rom beliebt gewesen zu sein." - Quelle: (

"Die Kirche auf dem Kalvarienberg ist der Schmerzhaften Muttergottes geweiht. Mit ihrem Bau wurde 1664 begonnen, am 24. Oktober 1665 wurde sie eingeweiht.
Vermutungen, es habe sich auf dem Hügel zumindest ein Vorgängerbau - sei es eine Kirche, sei es eine befestigte Anlage - liegen zwar wegen der herausragenden Position der Kirche nahe, sind aber bisher nicht bestätigt worden: nach allem, was bisher festzustellen war, ist diese Kirche der erste und einzige Bau auf dem Kalvarienberg.
Es handelt sich im Kern um einen achteckigen Zentralbau mit westlich angebautem Chor. An diesen Kernbau sind im Osten und Westen je ein Raum angebaut: im Osten eine später hinzugefügte Vorhalle, die als Eingangsraum dient und die Fastenkrippe sowie das "Grab Christi" beherbergt, im Westen eine gleichzeitig mit dem Kernbau entstandene Sakristei. Der Zentralraum ist von einer Dachlaterne bekrönt, der Turm sitzt als Dachreiter auf dem Chor." - Quelle: (
