"Soweit das Auge an diesem Ort reicht, trägt die gesamte Landschaft - die Berge, der See, die Felswände - deutliche Merkmale der letzten Vereisung während des Neozoikums (Pleistozän, Würm), die vor ca. 70.000 Jahren begann und bis vor 10.000 Jahren andauerte. Die Eislöcher, die im Volksmund auch als „Riesenkessel“ bezeichnet werden, sind ein Merkmal für das ehemalige Vorhandensein eines gewaltigen Gletschers, der an dieser Stelle ca. 1.000 Meter hoch war und die Landschaft geomorphologisch einschneidend verändert hat.

Dieses Phänomen ist gleichzeitig mit der Entstehung von tiefen Gletscherspalten aufgetreten, die von dem sich bewegenden Gletscher gebildet wurden. Das in diesen in Wasserfällen hinabstürzende Schmelzwasser prallte gegen den Felsen am Boden, bildete einen Strudel, mit dem große Felsblöcke aus hartem Gestein abgetragen wurden und formte Eislöcher in dem weicheren Gestein.

Die zahlreichen Eislöcher in dieser Gegend gehören zu den bekanntesten im gesamten Alpenraum. Antonio Stoppati, ein namhafter Geologe und Paläontologe, geboren in Lecco 1824 und gestorben in Mailand 1891, hat sie erforscht und in seinem berühmtesten Werk „Il Bel Paese“ beschrieben." - Quelle: (visit link)

"All the landscape within view from this place: mountains, lake, rockfaces… bears clear signs of the last glacial phase of the Neozoic (Pleistocene, Wurm) Age, comprising a period between 70.000 and 10.000 years ago. The potholes, popularly known as „giants‘ cooking pots“ are a characteristic sign of the presence of a powerful glacier, here about 1.000 metres high, which deeply and incisively modified the geomorphological aspects of the environment.

This phenomenon happened where deep crevasses were formed on the inside of the glacier itself when in movement. The melted water, falling through these crevasses in the form of a waterfall, struck the underlying rock violently and, whirling round large rocks of hard stone in a vortex, they dug out the pothole in the softer rock.

The numerous potholes present in this area are among the most famous in the whole Alpine range. Antonio Stoppati, a well-known geologist and paleontologist, (born in Lecco in 1824, died in Milan in 181) studied and described them in his most famous work „Il Bel Paese“." - Source: (visit link)
