"Die Festung Kufstein ist das Wahrzeichen der Stadt Kufstein und zählt zu den imposantesten mittelalterlichen Bauwerken Tirols. Oft wird die Festungsanlage fälschlicherweise auch Festung Geroldseck genannt.
Sie liegt auf dem Festungsberg oberhalb der Stadt Kufstein auf einem 90 m hohen Felsen direkt am Inn und ist per Lift erreichbar.
1205 wird die Festung das erste Mal urkundlich als "Castrum Caofstein" erwähnt. Sie war damals im Besitz der Bischöfe von Regensburg.
Ab 1415 verstärkte Herzog Ludwig der Gebartete die Befestigungen.
Im Jahr 1504 belagerte Kaiser Maximilian I. die Stadt und Festung Kufstein und eroberte diese auch. Er ließ die Anlage neu errichten und zur Festung ausbauen.
1703 fielen die Bayern in Tirol ein und eroberten dabei auch die Festung Kufstein, mussten diese allerdings bereits im darauffolgenden Jahr wieder räumen, nachdem sich die Tiroler Bauern gegen die bayrische Besatzung erhoben hatten. Infolge des Pressburger Frieden gelangte die Festung dann 1805 zusammen mit ganz Tirol erneut unter bayrische Herrschaft, ehe sie schließlich ab 1814 endgültig österreichisch wurde. Im Besitz der Stadt ist sie seit 1924, seit 1996 wird sie der Top City Kufstein GmbH verpachtet." - Quelle: Wikipedia
