EN: The Spittelmatthof Riehen is located on the border to Basel near the river Wiese. It was already documented in the 13th Century and was originally a dairy farm belonging to the hospital of Basel. It had to supply the hospital with milk, butter, cheese and meat. The property was expanded to about 24 hectares by the end of the 17th Century. In the 18th Century all buildings were demolished and replaced by the new farmhouse with barn and stables. From 1764 the estate was leased by the hospital.

In the end of the 19th century large areas near the river were bought by the state and declared as protected areas for the extraction of groundwater. The hospital also had to cede land. The whole farm was purchased in 1931 by Basel waterworks. The farm remained operational to this day as a tenant farm. Today the Spittelmatthof supplies mainly private customers with its products from the dairy industry.

DE: Der Spittelmatthof in Riehen befindet sich an der Grenze zu Basel in der Nähe des Flusses Wiese. Er wurde bereits im 13. Jahrhundert urkundlich bezeugt und war ursprünglich ein Sennhof des Spitals von Basel. Er hatte das Spital mit Milch, Butter, Käse und Fleisch zu versorgen. Der Grundbesitz wurde bis Ende des 17. Jahrhunderts auf etwa 24 Hektaren erweitert. Im 18. Jahrhundert wurden die Gebäude abgerissen und durch ein neues Bauernhaus mit Scheune und Stall ersetzt. Ab 1764 wurde das Gut vom Spital verpachtet.

Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts wurden grosse Wiesenaue vom Staat aufgekauft und zum Schutzgebiet zur Gewinnung von Grundwasser erklärt. Auch das Spital musste Land abtreten. Der ganze Hof wurde 1931 vom Wasserwerk Basel gekauft. Der Bauernbetrieb blieb aber bis heute als Pachthof erhalten. Heute versorgt der Spittelmatthof vorwiegend Privatkunden mit seinen Erzeugnissen aus der Milchwirtschaft.
