The Town of Hopkington dates back to the Colonial era. It was founded in 1715, when much of Massachusetts was rural and there was a need for a town pound. Since, the town is very proud of its heritage, they have preserved, maintained and marked the old town pound with a sign. The pound is located on the west side of Route 135 west of the town center.

The pound is roughly circular with a diameter of about 30'. It is constructed of stones, piled to a height of about 3', typical for New England stone wall construction. At one time a plywood cow was on display in the pound but it disappeared in 2008.
