While working on another waymark, I went to the Adams Street side of the Alabama Department of Archives and History Building and noticed what looked like a millstone on the ground with a small stone marker in front of it. Closer investigation revealed the marker said: "Millstone used by Peyton Bibb in tanning operations on his Elmore County plantation, 1817; granite anchor posts used in iron fence formerly surrounding capitol; made into table by Albert Taylor Goodwyn, 1875. Presented by William Bibb Goodwyn, 1965."
I was not able to find any other information about the millstone and its use in the tanning process.
