The practice of placing love padlocks on bridges or other structures does not appear to be as prevalent in Ottawa as it is in certain European countries. While there may be other love padlocks placed elsewhere in Ottawa, I am not aware as to where they might be located. There were a few of them on a fence next to the Bytown Museum, but on a visit today, they had been removed.
The love padlocks that are the subjects of this waymark are in the middle of and on on both sides of the bridge. They have been placed on a half-inch metal bar that appears to be part of the railing.
They are many types and sizes and most have the names of the couples engraved.
I noted that the padlocks caused the railing to rust and this may have some bearing on whether the love padlocks are allowed to stay or are eventually removed. My understanding is that they have been in place for a few years at least.
