This dam was originally built in 1855, to provide power for a flour mill. The mill is long since gone but the dam still remains and has become a landmark for the city of Mantorville.
Eighteen years ago the dam was rebuilt, but over the years, flooding and ice damage have caused damage that will require expensive repairs. The price tag to maintain it's historic integrity comes to $156,200. A cheaper option (one which the DNR recommends) would be complete removal. At present, the future of dam remains uncertain. Time will tell the final fate of this local landmark.
